Chapter Twelve

Harris had awakened with the sheets twisted and tangled. He’d tossed and turned all night, getting only moments of sleep here and there. After Jake had come back through the sliding glass door of the apartment last night with Rodge, Dax and Luke pelleted the guy with questions about what he and the dog saw at the warehouse where Rachel had last been seen. Harris had listened to every detail, searching for something—anything—that would lead him to her.

“Rodge went wild on the dock, most likely where Lorensen’s sneaker had been found,” Jake had said. “Other than that... nothing.”

She’d been missing for an entire day and that was one day too long for Harris. “What now?”

“Dax and other members of the team will question business owners along Rachel’s running route,” Luke had said. “I’m going to check in with the harbor patrol right after we leave here.”

The three cops had left shortly thereafter, leaving Rodge behind with Harris. The dog had followed him throughout the apartment like a shadow, and the gesture had been greatly appreciated.

Now Harris stood next to Hulk as the guy ran down the list of tasks to be completed for the day. He only heard every tenth word though. His mind was still combing through information, still searching, still hoping.

“Dude.” Hulk’s elbow jabbed Harris’s arm.

“What?” He rubbed at the point of contact.

“Where are you?” Hulk stuck his clipboard under his arm then took a swig from his coffee cup.

Harris rubbed his eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m here. I am.”

Hulk shook his head. “Nope. Don’t believe you.” He made a motion with his hand Harris took to mean spill it.

“Can’t.” He slid the clipboard from under Hulk’s arm and read the first three things on it. That didn’t stop him from feeling Hulk’s stare.

“Is it about your girl?”

“What makes you think that?”

“Isn’t everything always about a girl?” Hulk offered him a smile.

Harris returned it, but the smile was a lie. There wasn’t anything to smile about today. There wouldn’t be anything to smile about any day if Rachel wasn’t found.

“If you’re not going to tell me your troubles, then at least get your head in the game, kid. We got a job to do here. Joel’s all psyched that we may finish early. It’s always good when Joel’s psyched. It sometimes means bonuses.” Hulk’s eyes widened as he rubbed his hands together. “I don’t know about you, but I like bonuses.”

Extra money would buy him a sailboat quicker—a sailboat to take Rachel out on.

“I like bonuses too,” Harris said. “Let’s get to it.” He’d just have to let the police do their job while he did his. Easier said than done.

Harris and Hulk worked all morning and crossed many things off the list. Joel stopped in during their lunch and was indeed psyched.

“If only the whole crew worked like you two did.” He raised his eyes heavenward as if sending a prayer then left to meet with the architect of the hotel.

After lunch, the pair stayed busy, but a part of Harris’s mind was frantically rearranging the puzzle pieces of Rachel’s whereabouts.
